Is oat milk healthy?

Oat milk is all the buzz right now. From oat milk lattes to oat milk ice cream, the newest dairy alternative has certainly started a new trend in the plant-based scene. While it’s super trendy right now, is oat milk healthy?

We’re breaking down what you need to know about the newest trendy plant-based milk, plus our take on if we think you should include it in your diet.

What is Oat Milk?

First off, what exactly is oat milk? As you have probably guessed, oat milk is made from oats. This dairy alternative is derived from whole grain oats that are soaked in water, blended, and then strained. Just like nut-based milk, it’s actually pretty simple to make yourself with a nut milk bag or cheesecloth, if you’re feeling adventurous.

Why is Oat Milk so Trendy Right Now?

So, why exactly is oat milk so trendy right now? For one, it’s a great alternative to dairy milk if you are looking for a less expensive option than other dairy-free milk choices like coconut or hemp.

Second, it’s also super creamy. It turns your dairy-free latte into creamy goodness. Plus, it’s a great alternative to nut-based milk if you have a nut allergy.

All in all, oat milk sounds pretty great, right? Let’s take a look at whether or not this dairy-free milk option is indeed healthy.

Is Oat Milk Healthy

Let’s start by saying that we’re fans of oat milk around here. We think that it’s a great creamy dairy-free milk alternative that’s great to rotate with your other plant-based milk choices. And, if you aren’t a fan or can’t tolerate some of the other options like almond or coconut, oat is an excellent choice.

Here are four reasons why oat milk is healthy.

#1 Oat Milk Comes With Added Vitamins & Minerals: Since oats are naturally a great source of B vitamins, folate, magnesium, and zinc, oat milk can help give us a little boost of these important nutrients.

#2 Fiber: Not all milk provides fiber like oat milk. Oats are naturally rich in fiber, so it makes sense that oat milk will contain some as well. While not as much as eating the real thing, oat milk can provide up with about two grams per cup. Now, that’s pretty good for a glass of milk!

#3 Plant-based Protein: While it’s a common misconception that plant-based diets lack protein, here’s just one more example of just how easy it is to get more protein in your diet. In one cup of oat milk, you can pack in three grams of plant-based protein. Add oat milk as the base for your daily smoothie with some nut butter and vegan protein powder, and you have yourself a protein-rich shake.

#4 More Allergy-Friendly Than Other Dairy-Free Options: If you can’t tolerate nuts or soy, oat milk is a great choice. Oat milk is dairy, nut, and soy-free.

A Note About Gluten

If you are looking for oat milk that is certified gluten-free, look out for a GF label on the packaging. While oats are naturally gluten-free, oats happen to be processed on the same equipment as gluten-containing grains, so cross-contamination can happen.

If you have celiac disease or a serious gluten intolerance, you will definitely want a certified gluten-free oat milk.

How to Add Oat Milk to Your Diet

Ready to swap out your current dairy-free milk and give oat milk a try? Here are a few ways you can enjoy this creamy plant-based milk.

  • Added to smoothies.
  • Use to make chia pudding.
  • Make a healthy chocolate “milk” with oat milk, raw unsweetened cocoa powder, and a drizzle of pure maple syrup.
  • Use in place of dairy milk in your favorite baked goods recipes.
  • Use in coffee or tea.

The Bottom Line

We think oat milk is a great plant-based choice to add to your vegan diet. It’s suitable for those looking for a dairy, nut, and soy-free milk. It can also be suitable for a gluten-free diet as well, so long as you find certified gluten-free oat milk.

With its creamy consistency and added health benefits, we think you’ll be pleasantly surprised at just how delicious this dairy-free milk is.
