Top Reasons to Have an Apple a Day

Posted by Nicki Cooper on

An apple a day, or so they say. Most old proverbs have a grain of truth to them, but often times we don’t remember what the original meaning was. Does it hold any value for us today?

Actually it does.

1. Do you really need to eat one every day?

Well no, but three to five times a week is a good compromise. Apples have a lot of what your body needs in one convenient fruit.  They are full of vitamin C, which we all know helps boost the immune system.  They’re also full of flavonoids, which are powerful antioxidants that help protect the heart from coronary and cardiovascular diseases. Apples also have phenols that cut down your bad cholesterol while boosting your good cholesterol. They even contain phytonutrients which have been linked to the prevention of neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer’s!

2. They fight cancer.

An apple’s flavonoids contain a strain of flavonol that can help protect your body from pancreatic cancer.  They also found triterpenoids in the skin of an apple that help prevent cancer cell growth in the colon, liver and breasts. Finally, the high fiber content of apples also protects your body from colorectal cancer.

3. And type 2 diabetes.

Speaking of that fiber, it also reduces your risk of type 2 diabetes, leads to less build-up of plaque in your arteries, binds to fat in the intestines helping to lower overall cholesterol which in turn helps to prevent gallstones, helps keep your bowels regular which minimizes IBS and hemorrhoids and best of all the added fiber fills you up quickly helping to curb binge eating and weight gain!  So bring on the fiber.

4. They are good for you.

Apples also have a little Vitamin A, Magnesium, Vitamin B-6, iron and calcium. They are full of potassium and even have a little protein.  It really is a well-balanced source of vitamins, minerals and nutrients and all for around 100 calories.  Remember though, all these nutrients are only obtained if you eat the skin too!
