3 ways to do a total spring reset: mind, body, and emotions

Spring is here, and what an exciting time of renewal, hope, and change! It’s time to shed off the winter pounds, start a new exercise routine, and improve your mental well-being.
Optimal health is not always under our control, but we can make small changes that can lead to significant improvements in our physical, mental, and emotional health. And, that is what we all want – to feel great and beam with energy every day.
Read on to find out how to do a total reset of your body, mind, and emotions – how to make small, everyday changes to improve your overall health.

How to Reset Your Body

A body well-cared-for contributes to a happier life. Taking the best care of your body primes you for less stress, fewer illnesses, and gives you more energy. Here are five ways to reset your body.

Exercise daily.

There is no doubt that moderate exercise does wonders for the body! Exercising improves muscle strength, gives you energy, increases your metabolism so you lose or maintain an ideal weight, helps to remove toxins in your body, and reduces stress. If you are not exercising regularly, start by walking around your neighborhood. Start with just 10 minutes per day if that is all you can do, then increase your walking time, little by little, until you reach 30 minutes. Daily exercise is the first step to resetting your body to a healthier one.

Eat more fruits and vegetables.

Everyone agrees that fruit and vegetables are amazing for your health. So increasing your fruit and vegetable intake is important, especially if you have added some junk food to your diet this winter. Vegetables and fruit contain an abundance of minerals, vitamins, antioxidants, inflammatory reducers, and fiber, all of which work to fight diseases like diabetes, heart disease, and cancer. The results are an increase in energy and a healthy body reset!
Eating a fully plant-based diet is even better! Studies show a whole foods, plant-based diet is the best option for abundant health. Learn more about the plant-based diet from The Plant-Powered Dietician, Sharon Palmer

Detoxify your body.

Want to take it a step further and reset that body to start your spring with a bang? We all eat too much processed food at times, so a detox is a perfect way to reboot your body for better health. A detox cleanse does not have to be hard or taste bland. Detoxes or fasts are delicious these days! A 3 to 5-day fruit juice or fruit and vegetable smoothie detox might be in store for you. Detoxing cleanses the organs from toxins that contribute to disease, increases your energy, and will help you lose weight. Learn more about detoxing the body.

Drink lots of water.

Water, what a life-giving thing! The consensus these days is drinking 64 oz. of water daily is best for most people, depending on size and activity level. If you are a strong athlete or always on the go, you will need to drink more water. It’s best to drink a large glass of water every morning after awakening and drink more throughout the day.

Water has many benefits and is vital for a body reset. It lubricates and protects your spinal cord, tissues, joints, and muscles. It flushes out toxins and waste, regulates body temperature, creates saliva, helps with nutrient absorption, aids in weight loss, improves blood-oxygen circulation, helps with digestion, helps your brain function, and keeps you hydrated. Your body is made of over 60 percent water, so drinking an adequate amount is vital to reset your body to a healthier state.

Add lemon or lime to your water if you find it bland. Or, you can add strawberries or blueberries to your water for an extra special treat.

Get enough sleep.

Did you know studies estimate that 50 to 70 million Americans are not sleeping enough? A bit shocking, right? Sleep is vital to reset the body. It is necessary for an optimal immune system, healing the body, and is critical for keeping off excess weight. Getting proper sleep per night is also important for your brain that regulates your body. While you sleep, your brain removes waste that may cause neurodegenerative diseases, reduces depression or mental illness, and increases cognitive performance. You will feel better and think better with more sleep!
It is important to sleep 7 to 9 hours per night so your body can fully recoup from the day and contribute to a full-body reset.

How to Reset your Mind

Our minds can become overburdened with too much to think about or remember, and we become stressed. A stressed mind is not at peace and won’t function at its best. Below are three ways to reset your mind to a calmer state.

Meditate daily.

One of the most impactful ways to stop the racing thoughts and put your mind at ease is meditation. Meditating has many benefits for our minds such as expanding self-awareness, controlling or reducing anxiety, increasing attention span, and reducing stress.

Even if you meditate for 5 minutes, studies show it will improve your well-being. To meditate, remove all distractions and sit quietly in a room by yourself. Think of an object or a place that calms you like a mountain stream or the seaside, and focus on it. You might have sporadic thoughts, and that is okay. Just go back to your vision. Be patient with yourself and do not worry if you stray from your focus. Do this every day to reset your mind, calm it, and reduce stress.

Focus on one thing at a time.

Life is so full these days that it makes sense to try and do two or three things at once, right? But, multitasking is a myth. Your brain operates better when you focus on one thing at a time. Multi-tasking has been shown to increase stress and change the way your brain functions, leading to decreased productivity, which defeats your goal to accomplish more at once. So, fully focusing on the task at hand will help you be more productive, reduce stress, and help you reset your mind. And as mentioned earlier, meditating is good practice in learning to focus.

Improve the quality of your thoughts.

A positive attitude goes a long way. We all know this, but we forget that it’s the truth. Studies show choosing to see things positively increases healing, reduces stress, and boosts your happiness.

Noticing your thoughts is also important. If you are always worrying, you will suffer from stress. If you tend to be hard on yourself, you could improve the quality of your thinking to feel calmer and happier. See yourself succeeding or as a capable person to reset your mind to a happier place. Silence the inner critic. If you need help with this, seek out a professional counselor.

How to Reset your Emotions

We all feel out of sorts sometimes – that is normal. To feel emotions is to be human. But, sometimes our emotions stop us from living our lives to the fullest and from living stress-free. Here are four ways to help mediate your emotions and reset them in the right direction.

Start journaling.

The word “journaling” can be scary to some people, but it doesn’t have to be! Our emotions are sometimes all over the place, and that is what it means to be human. Journaling has been shown to increase well-being and happiness, decrease stress, and help put life into perspective. You can journal for just 5-10 minutes per day or longer if you choose. Write about anything on your mind. Purge the negativity and self-talk. A good way to do this is to write in the morning before work to begin your day fresh or in the evenings before going to bed to recap the day.

Practice gratitude.

Another way to reset your emotions is to express gratitude for everything in your life. Being grateful has been shown to reduce stress, increase your happiness, improve your physical health, enhance your empathy, and improve your self-esteem. List one to two things in your journal per day that you are thankful for, such as your spouse, your children, your health, your car, your dog, or even your guitar. You get the picture. You will be pleasantly surprised by what happens when you do this! This small action will help reset your emotions to a happier state.

Build or seek a support system.

It’s important to have friends or family that will help you when you are struggling emotionally. Even one friend is all you need. Find someone who will listen without judgment and allow you to express yourself when you are feeling emotional. It’s important to feel your emotions and release them with someone you trust. Having a support system for these times will help reset your emotions and put you in a calmer place.

Get creative.

Using your creativity to embark on something new is a way to manage your emotions. Artists of all sorts express themselves by their work, but you do not have to be a famous artist. Just be yourself and immerse yourself in something you love to do or would like to learn such as learning how to play the piano or developing a new recipe. Your emotions will heal and reset as you embark on your creative endeavor. You will relax, rejuvenate, and feel better.

Summary

As you can see, our emotions, mind, and body work in harmony for our best health like a recipe that is not the same without that one ingredient. The best way to do a spring total body, mind, and emotional reset is to realize all of these are related and work together, and tackle them one at a time. Spring is here. Are you ready?
